Enugu Pays Minimum Wage; Clears Arrears

Enugu State government has, in addition to the payment of the minimum wage, also cleared the arrears of its civil servants in the implementation of the N18,000 minimum wage law.

According to the release signed by the state Commissioner for Information, Chuks Ugwoke, the government took the decision in recognition of the harmonious relationship that has existed between her and the organised labour, as well as the administration’s resolve to accord priority attention to the welfare of workers in the state.

“In addition to the payment of the new wage, the Enugu state government has also cleared the minimum wage arrears. It will be recalled that the governors had agreed to commence payment of the new wage structure by this August and to pay the April to July arrears not later than October. But to show good faith and Government’s commitment to the welfare of the workers, the arrears had dropped into their individual accounts by Monday.”

Asked to react to the two-week ultimatum given to the government to reach a consensus with labour after the recent strike action, the commissioner noted that there was no cause for alarm.

“We’ve always favoured negotiation as against confrontation. We’re in talks with labour to smoothen whatever rough edges that may exist. Government has asked that it should be allowed to talk with the local chapter of labour since we’ve had no problems with them up till now. The national leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress should intervene if we can?’t reach a compromise with the local chapter. We plead that both parties are given this opportunity.”
